Tipitina’s Internship Program led by artistic director, Donald Harrison Jr., is an after-school jazz program for high school students. The program focuses on instrumental performance, recording, music theory, and career professionalism. The program is free of charge and accepts intermediate and advanced music students. Participants are expected to be interested in pursuing a career in music. Those interested in being admitted to the Internship Program must be available to attend class once a week throughout the school year – each class is 2 hours.
Tipitina’s Internship Program serves students from high schools throughout Greater New Orleans. Participants are ethnically and socio-economically diverse; this diversity is one of the program’s key strengths. Students who go on to higher-level university music and production programs are ahead of their peers thanks to the many hours of direct support they received from the Tipitina’s Foundation staff.
Past participants have continued their music studies at the Juilliard School, Brown University, the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music at Tisch School of the Arts / NYU, The Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, and the Berklee College of Music. As a result of the Tipitina’s Internship Program, students have had the opportunity to play at events, such as national conventions, conferences, parties, benefit concerts, and movie openings–starting them on their music business career path.The program is part of the Berklee City Music Network, makes use of the PULSE online curriculum, and has sent numerous students to Berklee’s acclaimed Summer Music Program, as well as Berklee’s regular four-year program.

Interns spend time developing instrumental skills, learning recording technologies and production techniques, participating in workshops with musicians, producers, and scholars, as well as receiving general academic tutoring.
