Budding Musicians Enjoy On-Stage Experience

Our Sunday Youth Music Workshops (SYMW) offer young, aspiring musicians the opportunity to play with and learn from experienced and celebrated musicians. We’ve welcomed Jazz singer Carmella Rappazzo, the Jazz/Funk sounds of Chris Severin Trio, the contemporary Jazz band Soul Heirs with the Jazz Education Network, the R & B/Neo-soul/Jazz group Tom and Elliot and Berklee City Music in conjunction with their “Check Your Pulse” Tour.

So who attends our workshops and what is their take-away? We spoke with some of our regulars to give you an idea of the impact this program can have on the aspiring young musicians of our community. Tipitina’s Foundatio Intern and high school senior Jacob Wojcik (bass and guitar) started attending the weekly workshops last year to gain some real on-stage experience. Newcomer Lotus Baudier began attending SYMW in June of 2017. They quickly found common ground with their musical styles and interests. Over the next few workshops, the two formed a band called Lotus In Stereo with drummer and vocalist Andrew Lodriquss. They’ve just marked their one year anniversary playing together. The band plays alternative rock, rock and punk rock with edgy lyrics penned by Lotus. On-stage practice at the workshops has been invaluable for developing stage presence and overcoming stage fright. And some of the tips from the professionals have been unexpected and incredibly helpful. A particular highlight was getting on-stage guitar lessons from Walter “Wolfman” Washington.

The band is currently cutting their first album. They’ve already performed at the 3rd Street Songwriter’s Fest, Tangipahoa State Fest, Beach Club in Covington and as an opening act at Tipitina’s during our Foundation Free Fridays events. They have played at Southport Hall  and at Gasa Gasa (Check them out at: We are so excited to share this story with all of you who support programs like the Sunday Youth Music Workshops. Thank you.

SYMW included a special Youth Concert featuring SYMW participants. The concert was followed by a panel discussion from the House of Blues Music Forward Foundation covering the topic of Stage Performance. For more details, contact (504) 309-7934. These free Workshops, best for ages 10 – 18.
