Volunteer Your Time

The Co-Op needs volunteers. If you would like to help staff the office or help with tutoring digital media (Photoshop, web design, audio, etc.) or other business skills, please contact

The Music Office Co-Op is immediately seeking volunteers to manage the following projects in New Orleans and Shreveport:

  • Staffing the Co-Op Office - Involves acting as a receptionist and office manager. Process new members, schedule appointments, handle the phones, light data entry. Provide ad-hoc support with Internet and productivity applications including the Microsoft Office and Macromedia MX Studio software suites, if possible. Involves committing to at least one three-hour shift, once a week, and remaining on-site during the shift.

  • Entrepreneurial Support - Assist Co-Op members with establishing and growing their cottage businesses. Types of businesses include recording studios, record labels, music management firms, and artist/performers. Skill at budgeting, fundraising, business planning, administering, and managing the execution of business goals are all needed. Volunteers will consult with Co-Op members by appointment. Working under the supervision of the Co-Op coordinator, the team will define goals and strategies for the member's business, establish the series of tasks and its timeline, then execute on the plan. Six-month project cycles are anticipated; a commitment of ninety minutes per week or more is required.

  • Marketing Support - Assist Co-Op members, who may have limited literacy, with crafting bios, press releases, cover letters, and other marketing/advertising collateral. Writing, editorial, marketing, public relations, and publicity skills will come into play. Project cycles may range from one hour to several weeks; volunteers collaborate with Co-Op members, under the supervision of the Co-Op coordinator, to define and achieve goals.

  • Production Support - Requires knowledge of Adobe and/or Macromedia software suites, plus desktop publishing and/or Web design skills. Assist Co-Op members, who may have limited technical ability, with projects including flyer design, press kit creation, Web site design, CD package design, under the supervision of the Co-Op coordinator. Project cycles may range from one hour to several weeks; volunteers will collaborate closely with Co-Op members to define and achieve their goals. Amount of hands-on ãheavy liftingä by volunteer will vary depending on member's skill level.

  • Street Team - Help spread the word about the Music Office Co-Op. Flyering, handbill distribution, placing Co-Op information in area music stores, cafes and other public information points. Explaining the Co-Op's mission and programs to prospects, and generating word-of-mouth buzz. We're asking for ninety minutes per week or more; previous/current street team experience desired.

Provide Corporate Sponsorship

Membership fees only cover roughly 1/10th of the Co-Op's operating costs. The Co-Op is supported in part by grants from the State of Louisiana, the City of New Orleans, the Shreveport Downtown Development Authority, the Charles T. Beaird Foundation, the Goldring Family Foundation, and Harrah's New Orleans Casino. The Co-Op receives additional support from Office Depot, OffBeat magazine, Universal Furniture, and Dig In with Chef Duke and Rock.
