Acceptance Speech by Sonny Schneidau

On Monday, April 30, 2018, Tipitina’s Foundation’s held our 17th annual Instruments A Comin’ festival and concert. Thanks to the generosity of so many attendees and donors, more than $150,000

was raised to support the placement of musical instruments in New Orleans school band and after-school programs. Our Battle of the Bands featured the bands of St. Mary AcademyandSt. Katherine Drexel in the first-ever all girls battle! Landry Walker kept the excitement going with a face-off against and McDonogh 35 High and a performance by Martin Luther King High closed out the Battle.

Each year at Instruments A Comin’, Tipitina’s Foundation takes a few moments to acknowledge those artists and music lovers who help to perpetuate New Orleans’ unique sound and musical culture. This year Tipitiana’s Foundation was proud to recognize Bill Hammack, Janice Parmelee and Chef Donald Link with plaques on the Tipitina’s Wall of Fame in honor of their unwavering commitment to our mission. Be it by donating gift certificates from Couchon for our auction, catering a seated luncheon for 200 from Calcasieu, or participating as a sponsor for Instruments A Comin’, Bill, Donald and Janice have been steadfast supporters. Through their presence in the community, they’ve worked to cultivate new supporters for the Foundation, always spreading the word about what we do and helping us make new connections.

“The Sweetheart of New Orleans”, Jazz and R&B singer Wanda Rouzan and piano player Sonny Schneidau were also honored with illuminated plaques on the Tipitina’s Walk of Fame in recognition of their dedication to promoting and perpetuating New Orleans’ rich musical culture. Our outdoor festival was followed by a benefit concert featuring Galactic, New Orleans Suspects, Flow Tribe, Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes, Naughty Professor, Honey Island Swamp Band, Bo Dollis Jr. and the Wild Magnolias, Nth Power and The Fortifiers. We are so thankful to these bands for performing in support of our work!

Instrument awards will take place in the Fall, stay tuned!
